When men are slim or toned and still have female breasts, doctors speak of gynecomastia. The causes of man breasts can be varied, as can the ways to get rid of them. We clarify the most important questions.

When do we start talking about a man's breasts?

The transition from the typical man's chest to the breasts can be gradual and is basically a question of definition. There are also many strength athletes who train specifically for a more pronounced chest. These are the most effective exercises for a broad chest. However, gynecomastia has nothing to do with excessive strength training. Doctors speak of a male breast when the bulge of the breast is larger than normal and more similar to a female breast.

How are men's breasts created?

In men, female breast enlargement can occur on one or both sides and has a variety of causes, which in the vast majority of cases are harmless to health, as studies have shown. Gynecomastia most often develops in newborns, during puberty and in old age due to hormonal changes.

In general, a distinction must be made between two forms of gynecomastia:

  • Lipomastie: In the false variant, medically known as “pseudo-gynecomastia”, the enlarged breast consists entirely of fatty tissue (lipomasty), which has developed as a result of being overweight.
  • True gynecomastia: True gynecomastia, on the other hand, is an enlargement of the glandular tissue, which is usually caused by hormonal disorders. What form it might be can only be clearly clarified through a mammography or an ultrasound examination.

What are the most common causes of gynecomastia?

In the case of pseudo-gynecomastia, fatty breasts are simply caused by excess weight, which can be caused, for example, by poor diet, lack of exercise or a metabolic disorder.

However, if an increased formation of mammary gland tissue is to blame for breast growth, it is often due to an overproduction of the female sex hormone estrogen and a deficiency of the male sex hormone testosterone. This is what every man should know about testosterone. The hormonal disorder can be caused, for example, by illnesses or estrogen-containing medications, care products, doping substances for muscle building and foods. For example, if consumed excessively, beer can potentially lead to the development of a woman's breasts, as hops contain plant substances that have a similar effect to estrogen in the body – so-called phyto-estrogens.

When should I see a doctor if my breasts are growing?

In general, it doesn't hurt to clarify your observations with a doctor. Especially if you have breast pain, notice lumps, or any kind of secretion from the mammary gland. Gynecomastia can also be a sign of cancer or a malignant tumor. Around 700 men in Germany develop it every year, according to the Men with Breast Cancer Network.

What helps against unusual breast growth?

Do you want to get rid of your man boobs again? This is what you can do about it:

  • To do sports: You can also easily train away man breasts if you are overweight. Rely on intensive endurance sports and lots of strength endurance training with high repetition numbers. The aim is to reduce the body fat percentage, then the male breasts will disappear again. The perfect training plan for this:
  • Do chest exercises: Although strength training builds up the muscles in the chest and tightens the skin, it does not specifically melt away the fat there. However, that may be enough if the problem is less big than you think. The most effective way to train your chest muscles is through different variations of the bench press.

  • Take medications: In the case of gynecomastia, the hormonal balance can be corrected by taking testosterone medications or specifically blocking estrogen. But you should definitely discuss this procedure with your doctor.

Can you get rid of man boobs by losing weight?

Changing your diet while exercising is a real weight loss booster. How about our fat burner champions, for example? But even if you are diagnosed with gynecomastia, changing your diet can be a way to bring your hormones back into balance.

When does gynecoma surgery make sense? How does it work?

Surgery helps with both pseudo- and real gynecomastia and should only be an option for you if all other attempts to get rid of man breasts are unsuccessful. “In the case of gynecomastia, all of the mammary gland tissue is removed via an approximately 2 centimeter long incision below the mammary gland,” explains Dr. Uwe W. Petrus, cosmetic surgeon from Munich. “This only creates a small skin seam and the skin stitches can be removed again after 12 days at the latest.”

In the case of lipomastia, i.e. a pure increase in fat in the breast area, only the excess fatty tissue is suctioned off. Dr. Petrus: “This only requires tiny incisions in the area of the side chest wall. You then have to wear a chest corset for about three weeks so that the skin regresses.”

The operation takes just over 1 hour and is carried out both in twilight sleep and under general anesthesia. Expect an overnight stay. You will be able to socialize again about three days after the gynecomastia operation, but you are usually not allowed to do sports again until 4 to 6 weeks later.

How much does gynecomastia surgery cost?

An operation costs between 2000 and 5000 euros. The health insurance company only covers the costs if gynecomastia is diagnosed, not for pure liposuction, or if your doctor certifies that you have severe psychological stress caused by the male breasts.

No man wants breasts like a woman. But there are ways and means to get rid of men's breasts – through exercise, the right diet and medication. If necessary, surgery can also help, but you should only consider this if all other methods do not work and the suffering is very severe.
