How healthy is a vegan diet?

Most people want to grow old healthily and live as long as possible. You can even influence this through a healthy lifestyle: plant-based diets can improve men’s health, a new US study has found. In addition to its beneficial effect on chronic diseases, it also has an influence on urological diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer.

A vegan diet protects against these diseases

In order to investigate whether there is a connection between plant-based diets and the occurrence of urological diseases, the researchers looked at 346 data sets, of which 24 were ultimately suitable for closer examination. The results showed: A plant-based diet can help prevent and treat urological diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer.

Reduced risk of prostate cancer progression and recurrence

The study proves what previous research results have already shown: vegan nutrition has an effect particularly against prostate cancer, the most common malignant tumor in Germany. It was shown that men who said they ate the most plant-based diets had a 52% lower risk of disease progression and a 53% lower risk of recurrence than those whose diets contained the least amount of plants had.

Vegan Diet: Eat these foods for a healthier life

What exactly does a healthy vegan diet look like? If you eat mostly sugar, white flour or processed products, a plant-based diet is not healthy either. However, high consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes can help prevent and combat disease. A vegan diet therefore protects against diseases such as cancer, as foods that are particularly cancer-promoting, such as sausages or dairy products, are not included. It also contains a high proportion of substances that have anti-cancer effects. Individual vegan foods that contain a lot of lycopene, such as tomatoes, in particular, counteract prostate cancer. Those who avoid dairy products reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by as much as 60%.
